We are extremely excited to say that as of Monday 10th May we are once again open and welcoming visitors to Discovery Point and RRS Discovery
To ensure all of our visitors have a safe and enjoyable visit we have made several changes and we will detail these here:
What will be open?
All of our galleries are now available, allowing you to enjoy many audio-visual film shows and view over 150 historic polar artefacts on display. All of this and then stepping on board the world famous RRS Discovery which allows you the chance to follow in the footsteps of Captain Scott and Ernest Shackleton as you explore the decks of this incredible 119 year old ship. A one way system will ensure you can enjoy your visit in safety, while break out spaces will let other visitors pass you in comfort should you wish to spend longer in any one area, soaking up the atmosphere of a ship that has visited Antarctica on three scientific expeditions. Additional exhibits and activities have been added on board and a new quayside exhibit is in the works!
We have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure we are “Good to Go”, letting you discover our museum with the confidence and peace of mind we all need at this time.
Our gift shop will also be open, allowing you the opportunity to buy RRS Discovery themed items with everything from jackets and t-shirts through to whisky and wine. We also hold a wide range of polar books and locally sourced Scottish gifts. The gift shop can be visited for free even if you do not wish to explore the ship at this time.
Our Online Gift Shop is also available – allowing the option to browse and buy from the comfort of your own home
Cafe at the Point
Our cafe is now fully open and once again selling a fantastic range of teas and coffee as well as locally sourced homemade snacks made by our in-house cafe team. The cafe is available to all and you do not need a ticket to enjoy our award winning food and drink!
What will it cost?
Adult: £11.75 Concession: £9.15 Child: £6.50 Family: £32.65 Under 5: free
All paid admission costs will also include a free annual pass, allowing you to revisit as many times as you wish within a 12 month period for no extra cost.
What are the opening times?
Opening times are: 10:00 – 18:00 Monday – Saturday (11:00 on Sundays)
Do I need to book? How do I pay?
There is no need to book a ticket in advance. Initially we will follow the system in place at all supermarkets as we feel everyone is now comfortable with how this works and it is the most “normal” situation for all to experience. This will involve a managed queue with social distance markers in place and hand sanitiser stations also provided. There is no need to book a ticket in advance and we are not using a timed entry system. Our online booking system is currently under redevelopment and will be relaunched shortly
We will be operating a cashless system. Where possible we are also encouraging the use of contactless payment options – remember the increased limit of £45 for contactless!
Will I need a face covering?
Yes. All visitors are required to wear a face covering. Our staff will also be wearing these. These measures are to match government guidance and to also provide peace of mind for all of our visitors and staff and we ask you to comply with this rule.
Do I need to leave my contact details?
You may have heard or read that for the purpose of Test and Protect you will have to leave your details. We appreciate that some people will have concerns relating to this and we would like to reassure you the reasons we are taking part and also what will happen with your data.
For the health and safety of our visitors and staff we are recording the name and contact details of everyone who visits (or the lead person in a family group) to support NHS Scotland’s efforts in tackling COVID-19. This information will be used to enable NHS Scotland and statutory partners to contact you should you have been in the premises around the same time as someone who has tested positive for coronavirus. Contacting people who might have been exposed to the virus is an important step in stopping the spread.
In order to assist in the containment of the virus, we will only share your data when it is requested directly by NHS Scotland and statutory partners. This will only be in the unlikely event there is a cluster of coronavirus cases linked to the premises.
We will only collect: Your name and contact telephone number or postal address/email address.
