Local engineer Thomas Smith, born in Broughty Ferry in 1752, moved to Edinburgh to further his career with the development of lamps and street lighting. His lamp innovation was noticed by the Northern Lighthouse Trust who appointed him as their first engineer and tasked him with protecting the mariner around the coast of Scotland and Isle of Man by constructing lighthouses. One lighthouse was that of Little Cumbrae Isle on the Firth of Clyde which was built along with his step son Robert Stevenson (later known for the Bell Rock Lighthouse near Arbroath).
