Anne Strathie tells the tale of ‘Birdie’ Bowers

14 November - 14 November, 2018

Wednesday 14th November | 7pm

Discovery Point, Discovery Quay, Dundee  DD1  4XA

The Friends of Dundee Heritage Trust are delighted to welcome Anne Strathie for the first lecture in the ‘Discovery Lecture series’.

Anne is the author of ‘Birdie Bowers: Captain Scott’s Marvel’ and will talk about Birdie, the Greenock-born explorer whose early fascination with Antarctica and the Discovery expedition led him to join for Scott’s Terra Nova expedition and reach the South Pole in 1912.

Henry ‘Birdie’ Bowers was the youngest of Captain Scott’s five man party who reached the South Pole in January 1912 but died on the return journey in March 1912.

Anne will also tell the story of a lesser-known explorer whose attempt to purchase the Discovery in 1914 contributed to his headline-making death in 1915.

Anne was born and educated in Scotland and has also written ‘From Ice Floes to Battlefields: Scott’s Antarctica in the First World War.’  Anne has done extensive research on her books at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, other archives and has also visited Scott’s Hut in Antarctica.

This is a free lecture open to the public and everyone is welcome.
